First, read aloud Sadie and the Snowman by Allen Morgan. Then invite children to write and illustrate their own page for an adorable literature-based collaborative book.

Sadie manages to make her snowman last a long time. Each time he melts, Sadie uses ingenuity to preserve him until the next snow. When Sadie’s snowman melts the first time, pause and ask children to predict what will happen next. As you read, pause to discuss how Sadie’s ideas are effective. Why doesn’t the snowman melt away?

 

Writing & Art

 

Begin with a discussion about adjectives: What are they and how do we use them? Ask children,“What are some other words we could use to describe Sadie’s snowman?” On chart paper, make a circle map of adjectives that describe a snowman. Add students’ suggestions to the chart. Distribute the student writing pages and have children write “Snowman” on the first and last lines. Students then choose five different adjectives from the chart and write them on the remaining lines.
