Word Watch: In Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction (Beck, McKeown, & Kucan, 2002), the authors stress the importance of noticing word use outside the classroom. To encourage this awareness in students, set up a Word Watch display that invites students to share “sightings” of words they are learning. Students can bring in the actual source of their sightings (such as a word used in a newspaper article), draw a picture (as in a word that appears on a sign), or simply write a note about where they encountered the word (as in a conversation)!
