Teaching Tip:
The word number is often used interchangeably with numeral, and for young children, differentiating between the two may create confusion. As children grow in their understanding of number concepts, they can learn that a numeral is a symbol that represents a number or idea—for example, when writing the date as month/day/year, as with 9/25/2012, the numeral 9 represents September, the ninth month of the year. To further develop math vocabulary, children can learn that a digit is a single numeral—the numeral 9 has one digit (9), while 25 has two digits (2 and 5).
