Besides conveying information, maps can also be colorful works of art. Students will first study maps then create their own, incorporating (1) a compass rose, (2) latitude and longitude lines, (3) a legend or key, and (4) a scale!
This project can be done as individual or group work. The objectives are to create a detailed visual map that provides a metaphorical setting for a descriptive story, to find examples of a literary device used in text and art, and to create interesting place names or metaphors using human feelings!
Young Mathematician—Use the scale on your map to determine how far one of your characters traveled during the story!
