To solve this self-checking word building pyramid puzzle, students read clues on each side of the pyramid and then change and rearrange letters to create words until they reach the top—where a final clue helps them uncover a mystery word!
This engaging puzzle format gives students independent practice in analyzing sound-symbol relationships, decoding, building spelling skills, and broadening vocabulary to become better readers!
Using a completed puzzle, point out that the final word gets its beginning consonant(s) from the last word on the left and a word-family ending from the last word on the right. Then invite students to brainstorm other words that share the same beginning letter (or letter combinations) or the same word-family ending with the final word!
