What better place to begin an exploration of neighborhoods and communities than in students' own backyards! In this mini-book, children will draw pictures of some of the people and places they see every day.
Allow time for students to present their books to classmates and talk about the details they included in their books. What do their neighborhoods have in common? How are their neighborhoods different? As a class, develop a definition of what a neighborhood is—for example, “Neighborhoods are places where people, live, work, and play.”
