ELL Tip: English Language Learners [ELLs] are a special consideration in the classroom. Students who speak English proficiently can be paired with an ELL student so that he or she gets additional support. It is also a good idea to create a supportive buddy group involving three students so that the English Language Learner can hear native speakers in a comfortable group setting and will not feel pressured to communicate. Pairing up an ELL student with a proficient student who speaks her native language can also prove beneficial so that the ELL student can have an opportunity to get her ideas across in her own native language. The native speaker can also “confer” with the ELL student in a language she understands!
