Teaching Tip:
The tradition of April Fool’s Day is said to come from France in the 1500s. According to the Julian calendar then, April 1 was New Year’s Day. When the new Gregorian calendar was created in 1582, January 1 became New Year’s Day. Since communication was slow, many people didn’t hear about the change for a while so they continued to celebrate and exchange gifts on April 1. They were soon called “April fools,” which led to the custom of playing tricks on this day.
