Teaching Tip:
Martin Luther King Jr. led citizens in many protest marches in the 1960s. During a protest, people speak up for something important; civil rights protesters called for equal rights for African Americans. At the March on Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963—the largest civil rights protest in history to that point—marchers protested unfair employment practices that denied jobs to blacks. King gave a famous speech called “I Have a Dream.” Its words still inspire hope today.
