Give students their own copies of the seven student-friendly self-assessment scoring guides. As they write, point out the trait or traits you want them to focus on and ask them to assess their own writing before they share it with you. Students who don’t see their writing as strong will need specific ideas on how to improve it, but the assessment is the first step along that path. Recognizing strengths and weaknesses in writing is an important skill all writers must master.
